Specialization

I've been working with some core technologies in my past within core domains of specific industries.

Two of my core profeciencies;
  • financial applications, I like tracking and solving money problems. Smile [:)]
  • video, media, and related hosting and software manipulations and management.
The two specific domains are absolutely different in many ways, but at the core functional level of technology there are some similarities.

With financial applications I've tracked, usually for Six Sigma statistical measurements, the validity of check transactions, check clearing, clearing houses, electronic transactions, business rules correlations and corrections, physical image storage, query, and analysis, and more.  These financial transaction applications of course have heavy reliance on transaction based development, some threading needs, queue based server APIs for things like BizTalk, Webspher Queue Services, and other such tools.  It is very interesting, of course to a geek like me, but also translates into a better understanding of operations and analysis of banks and financial institutions around the world.

While working on video and media in general most of my work has been centered around management, hosting, and presentation of videos.  In addition to that I have done extensive statistical analysis of media buying, reporting, and deriving correlations between media opportunities and the actual sale to the purchaser of that media.

I'll elaborate on that one a bit, because it really seems arbitary.  A customer, we'll go with Target, buys a media bundle, add, or other media item that provides some sort of exposure.  The exposure is then tracked by IP, or which channel on the TV presents the ad, or some other means.  When a purchase spike is then tracked in sales in a particular area, that strongly correlates to the location and identity of a prospective advertisement viewer the data is then provided via analytics of some type to provide more accuraute TV, internet, or other ad placement of media.

But in addition to that core, I have also been exposed to other media utilization of video for performance, teaching, and other requirements.

Now that I've run through these primary two vertical industry segments that I've worked in and with some recent conversations I'm going to push to specialize in these two primary sectors.  Of course I won't be able to say no to other technologies when I get to learn about them or even work with them, but I am going to make a conscious effort to work with the above stated items in a more specialized role.  Even if that means that in my own time I master the particular domains with extensive personal knowledge.

It is Friday, I'm off for some beer shortly, so cheers to specializations!
